Innovators change the future

Everytime we breathe in and out, oxygen comes back out as carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide causes the climate changes occuring on the planet, making it difficult for things to maintain its form. The amount of carbon dioxide produced by human breathing is not so fataly damaging for the environment. What does the most damage is the industrial business consisting of machines. Would you be interested if I told you that there is a innovator that came up with a way to use carbon dioxide as something useful?

Emily Cole, a grad student visited a lab in Princeton University. There, she met a scientist named Andrew Bocarsly. He came up with the idea of convertin carbon dioxide into something useful in 1994; however, he could not get the funding for it. Therefore, the idea sat in the shelf for a long time.

Emily found this idea fascinating and decided to find a way to make it come to reality. She decided to join the lab and assist him along the way of making it come true. She started a startup funding for the project and found out a way to convert the substance into something practical without much expense.

The company says that currently the conversion of carbon dioxide has a variety of ranges: from carbon dioxide to sunstances like isopropanol, acetone, and more than 30 chemicals. They also found out that they can use light as a tool to drive out the reaction needed for the conversion. They are hoping to be able to convert carbon dioxide into liquid lightethylene glycol which is the ingredient for plastic.

Their idea of changing something harmful into rather something useful has opened a whole new door for the world and many industries are looking forward to the outcome.

One Way to Make a More Sustainable Future

Everyday items are taken granted by many people. Our lives are full of convenientness thanks to the ant-like workers on the other side of the earth. The only problem caused by our actions does not lie only on the violation of people's rights; but it also effects the environment. By paying the right price for labor and consuming less of specific items such as jeans, we can solve both problems: human rights violation and damaged nature. This will take us a step closer to a sustainable future.

You as a consumer go to a store and pick up a pair of jeans for a "reasonable" price. Meanwhile, children in India are working day and night earning thirty six cents per hour. Does the price still look "reasonable"?

Not only this, but massive amount of water is used to make your pretty denim. In the process of making the textile to dying the item takes around 1800 gallons of water. It the water reusable? As a matter of fact it is not reausable due to all the chemicals that have dissolved in the water. This means that the water remains at the place where the item was finished. It is not only one pair of jeans. As you have seen at the store, there are at least couple hundred pairs of jeans located in one store. Large clothing companies have stores located in at least dozen places. The amount of water polluted goes beyond immagination.

As a person living in the twenty first century, I understand the popularity of the item itself and why it is a must have. IF is an item of trend. However, is it a neccecity for one to consume so many pairs of jeans? Would you still buy so many even that you know the price of it?

By paying the workers right wages, people will choose more carefully of what items to wear because naturally the item's price will go up. Less consumption will lead to less pollution. As a result, we will eventually get a step closer to sistainable future.

[IERW Post #2] Significance of Netherland

Have you ever cried your eyes out? We have all went through the phase of growing up, and its hard to deny that that secific time period was hard on us. She was just a girl struggling to get through it like how we did.

Anne Frank lived in the period of violent chaos. Nazis left a horrible scar known as the "hollocost". To avoid the persecution, the family moved to Amsterdam. However, the Germans invaded the Netherlands, resulting them into hiding.

The hiding place is a small secret annex above Otto Frank's office. There lived two families- the Franks and the Van Daans. Anne disbosomes herself to her dear friend "Kitty". Many stories she talkes about occurs in the attic. The story that we are most likely able to relate to is her feelings towards Peter. Some people might say that their mutual feelings were a teenage love affair. This is what breakes my heart the most: They were two teenagers with delicate feelings.

Anne's chit chat ends at some point of her fifteenth birth year. Records say that she and her family was taken to Auschwitz. She died form typhoid at age sixteen. I guess sweet sixteen doesnt visit everyone.

Netherland in the 1930-40s wasnt easy for anyone. It has a historical significance- a reminde that such tradgidy should never occur again. Anne Frank lets us into her time and touches the deepest part of our souls. It is inevitable to feel for her, isnt it?

[IERW Post#1] I Greet the New

Korea is well known for its beauty and culture- most celebratorial places are the Jeju Island, Seoul, Goujae, etc.. Because Geotourism focuses on a tourism that can last, I thought its about time we focus on something new. If we want a tourism to last, it should improve in every possible way; however, well known tourisms are already saturated with familiar ideas and I cant really think of a way to improve them any further. I suggest Kangwondo as a new tourism spot. It may sound strange but it will be a hot spot once its opened to foreigners.

Kangwondo is located some distance away from the urban area. Why do people go on vacations? They want to rest! Quality rest is gaurenteed when the nature is beautiful. Air in Kangwondo is much more clear and damp due to its location. Its mouintain views are incredible and one will get the satisfaction of having climed it even a little bit. Kangwondo will satisfy the sole purpose of vacation- quality rest.

Koreans can say this for sure- Kangwondo’s potatoes are amazing! More than half the potatoes consumed in Korea is from Kangwondo. What does everyone on Earth love? Carbohydrates and fatty oil! So why not combine them together and whip up something fantastic? Yes, potato pancakes! This will not only activate the local farms but also make the Korean traditional alchol ‘Makgulli’ even more famous.

Families with kids are always focusing on a way to nurture their children’s sentiments. They want their kids to become a loving and caring person. Studies have shown that kids that have encountered more often with animals are likely to grow up into someone with more stablized personality. Kangwondo is known for cows. Cows are special icons of Kangwondo. Many calf are born here daily. If Kangwondo comes up with a program for children and cows such as feeding hay or so, the interaction process could benefit both of them.

Geotourism is a new trend in the area. People are looking for sustainable business which benefits both the visitors and the local. Since its a new starting tourism spot, the tourism will stay fresh and new for a long time and will remain a more sustainable business than the existing tourism. It will definiately be a memorable vacation for both parties!

meet me:D

I am YeEun. Born on the first day of spring in 1996, I gave my mother a hard time. She was in labor for over seventeen hours and till this very day, my mom reminds me from time to time how much work she had to put into me.

That pretty much describes me all. Im picky(I was picky about letting the world greet me;) and careful. I put in my time when decision making comes; but I dont look back once I have made my choices- just the way I came into the world. There is no going back!

I am a person with sweet and caring personality. My mother showed me so much love for me that it wouldnt be fair if I decided to not share it with others. She didnt give up on me when I got all stubborn about coming out. That is where I get all the inspiration for holding on to things.

Nice to meet You.
